May 30th 2018 Layout Progress

Yesterday I did another Lynch River test bed pour.  One with two drops of dye and one with one drop of dye.  The pictures below show the results.

This is the pour using one drop of dye.  The brown dye is hardly visible.  I think the turf looks pretty good though.

This is the pour using two drops of dye.  I still think the dye is too light.  So something between two and three drops of dye are needed.

This shows the pour on the left using one drop of dye and the pour on the right using three drops of dye.  I think the result on the right looks better.

This shows the pour on the left using three drops of dye and the pour on the right using two drops of dye.  I think the three drops are too dark, but the two drops too light.  Something in between is needed.

If you want to see these pictures in a larger format go to the blog at http://eastonpotomac.blogspot.com/.

After seeing these results I decided it was time to start to work on the actual Lynch River bed and so I removed some of the small talus and added some sand.  Tomorrow I will add the larger rocks and then on Friday the turf to simulate growth in the river bed.  Hopefully sometime this weekend or early next week the actual Envirotex pour will take place.

Also yesterday the signal maintenance crew showed up in Hood to determine the cause of the signal lights that were not working.  They determine that switch machine #3 controlling the Hood station spur switch was the culprit.

Even though they had a spare switch machine upgrades are being done whenever a switch machine is replaced and the parts for this upgrade are on order and should arrive June 1st.

When these upgrade parts arrive the signal maintenance crew will crawl under the layout and remove the offending switch machine and replace it with a new one.  That should only take a weekend!  But it will be worth it to get the offending blue light back to working.  The loss of this light has caused much confusion among the train crews.  And has also caused severe backups at the east end of Hood.
