This year E&P has experienced higher than expected corporate overhead costs. Management needed to get these corporate overhead costs under control and the only way they came up with to do this was to reduce the operating department costs.
To this end the roundhouse foreman was notified about these mandatory cost reductions and he immediately set about to meet them. A result of this was the retirement of engine 21 and the assignment of engine 42 to additional passenger duties hauling trains 10 and 11 in addition to 30/31 and 20/21 to which it was already assigned.
But this change would not meet the goals set by management so the assignments for engine 44 and 43 were looked into for a possible swap. Engine 44 was assigned to the Broadway Turn over the more strenuous Shenandoah Route and had been having difficulty reaching Swift Run before running out of steam. This had required double heading the Broadway Turn from White Hall to Swift Run resulting in a complete waste of coal. Engine 43 was assigned to train 110 and the returning Thorny Point Extra over the less strenuous Potomac Route.
Today both engines were run over the alternate routes with a full consist of cars. The roundhouse foreman was please to report to E&P management that both perform their new assignments without incident. So starting with the next operating session engine 43 will be assigned to the Broadway Turn and engine 44 will be assigned to train 110/Thorny Point Extra. This will eliminate the need to double head the Broadway Turn from White Hall to Swift Run and hopefully bring operating costs down so management can continue their corporate research.
